2. Registering with the ECFMG- www.ecfmg.org
All Foreign Medical Graduates are required to register with ECFMG which becomes their processing center for registering for the Exams and applying for Residency in the US.
After the registration with ECFMG is complete, a student has to fill out the USMLE Application for Step 1, Step 2 CK, CS or Step 3. These steps should be taken in the order above.
3. Details of Step 1, Step 2 CK, CS and Step 3 are given under a separate point
4. Filling out the Residency Application – After the student has passed Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3 Exams he should fill up the ERAS application http://www.aamc.org/audienceeras.htm, which is an electronic application giving students details, marks, experience etc. All FMGs should send this application to 30-35 hospitals / programs.
5. Information of Hospitals / Programs – Details on each hospital / program are available on FRIEDA. A student should research the FREIDA website http://www.ama-assn.org/ to determine which hospitals and programs he should apply to and also for applying for Clinical Experience in the form of Fellow Ship / Externship / Observership.

6. Interview with the Hospitals / Programs – The Hospitals / Programs will call the candidates for Interview and the students Rank the programs based on his performance at the Interview and feed the selected list into the ERAS system.
The Hospital will also rank the students and feed their choices into the ERAS system.
7. Matching and Scrambling: The matching process takes place in 4 days in March every year wherein the students’ choice is matched with the Hospitals’ choice. If the student is matched then he should join his residency in that Hospital / Program.
In case he does not match, he has to call for unfilled positions, a list of which is provided and give a telephonic interview to obtain a match / Residency. On the 4th day the details of matching and residency programs is disclosed to the student.

8. Step 1, Step CK, CS and Step 3 Exams Details:
The USMLE Step 1 is the first part of the USMLE. It assesses whether medical school students or graduates can apply important concepts of the sciences fundamental to the practice of medicine.
The exam used to be an eight-hour computer-based test taken in a single-day, composed of seven 50-question sections with a total of 350 multiple-choice questions. The the number of questions were reduced to 48 questions per section, with a total of 336 questions. The test is administered at any of several Prometric computer testing sites located in India.
The USMLE scores are reported in either three-digits or two-digits. The three-digit score is calculated using a statistical percentile that ensures that scores from different years are read on a common scale.
The two-digit score is used to meet requirements of some medical licensing authorities that used a score of 75 as passing. A score of 185 is needed to pass; 300 is the highest score possible;
At present, the national mean score is 221. Many residency programs use a "cutoff" score for Step 1, below which applicants are unlikely to be considered.
The USMLE-Step 2-CK ("Clinical Knowledge") is the multiple-choice portion of the second part of the United States Medical Licensure Examination. Assesses clinical knowledge through a traditional, multiple-choice examination.
The USMLE Step 2 is generally taken during the 4th year of medical school by medical students.
The exam is a nine-hour single-day computer-based test composed of eight 44-question sets (352 multiple-choice questions in total). The test is administered at the Prometric testing sites around the world. Scoring is reported in 2 digit and 3 digit scores. Student is required to get 75 and 184 scores to pass the exam in 2 digit and 3 digit scores, respectively.
Step 2 Clinical Skills (Step 2 CS) of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is an exam that is currently administered to many medical students/graduates who wish to become licensed physicians in the U.S.
The USMLE Step 2CS exam consists of a series of patient encounters in which the examinees must see the simulated patient (SPs), take a history, do a physical examination, determine differential diagnoses, and then write a patient note based on their determinations.
Examinees are allowed 15 minutes to complete each encounter and 10 minutes for the patient note for a single patient encounter. Over the course of an 8-hour exam day, the examinees complete 12 such encounters.
The test is graded on a straight pass/fail basis, without any numerical score associated with it (as opposed to the other parts of the USMLE series). In order to pass, one must achieve a grade of "pass" in each of the three sub-components of the exam.[2]
This exam can be taken only in the USA at five Clinical Skills Evaluation Centers (CSEC), located in:
• Atlanta, Georgia
• Chicago, Illinois
• Houston, Texas
• Los Angeles, California
• Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Step 3 is the final exam in the USMLE series of examinations. It is part of the licensing requirements for M.D.s, D.O.s, and FMGs to practice medicine in the United States. USMLE Step 3 is a mandatory exam that needs to be passed in order to obtain license as a practicing physician. Some International Medical Graduates are required to clear USMLE Step 3 in order to obtain the much desired H1 Visa.
USMLE Step 3 comprises Multiple choice questions (MCQs) and Clinical Case Simulations (CCS). 75% of USMLE Step 3 constitutes MCQs where as approximately 25% constitute CCS.
USMLE Step 3 exams are delivered online and are available through out the year to the examinees. The examinee needs to register via. a state licensing board for this exam.
